Commanders Fall Short In Comeback, Lose To Lions 36-27

September 18, 2022

The Washington Commanders fell to 1-1 on the season after losing their first road game on the 2022 schedule to the Detroit Lions.

Washington entered this game as a one-point underdog to a Detroit team that had no problem pointing points on the board in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. The idea was if Washington could limit the Lions’ ground game, things would fall into place for the team to get a victory for the second straight week. It didn’t quite work out that way.

Commanders Lose to Lions 36-27

So many bad things added up over the course of the first two quarters, and as Terry Bradshaw came on to show halftime highlights the score was 22-0. From the strip-sack safety to not seeing a first down until 5:44 was left in the second quarter, the Commanders were a complete mess.

The team had 56 total yards at the end of the first half. A number almost surpassed in one play by Amon-Ra St. Brown with his 49-yarder in the first quarter.

The offense seemed to turn the corner in the second half although Carson Wentz was still sacked five times total in the game. Wentz ended the day 30 of 46 for 337 yards passing with three touchdowns, and one interception. That included touchdowns of 15-yards to Curtis Samuel, 20-yards to Logan Thomas, and a one-yarder to rookie Jahan Dotson, his third of the year.

Despite getting things together on the offensive side, the Commanders defense still struggled, giving up two crucial second-half touchdowns and 425 total yards on the day including 191 yards on the ground (at 8.0 yards per carry). Lions QB Jared Goff passed for 354 yards and four touchdowns on 20 of 24 passing. More importantly, Goff didn’t turn the ball over.

Commanders Head Coach Ron Rivera went for a two-point conversion down two scores early in the fourth that the team did not convert, and kicker Joey Slye missed an extra point, thus leaving Washington down nine points at the end.

Washington will play host to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3.
